Napa Critter Advice: How to Get Raccoons Out Of the Attic

A California raccoon is an animal, which is found in North America, has a length of up to 70 cm and can weigh up to 9 kg. The California raccoon is mostly active at night and eats plants, insects and small animals like lizards. Their habitat is the mixed forests of North America, but they have been able to adapt well and live in areas like mountainous areas and urban areas. Most home owners view these animals as pests because they encroach on their private space that is, their homes. They may enter a home because they seek protection from predators, nesting place and living area. The attic can serve as a perfect breeding ground for California raccoons because, it is warm, dark and quiet. When these small animals infest your home, it may be difficult to remove them because; they will not want to leave a protected area in search of a new one. You can remove them from your home by using either basic or professional methods.

How California raccoons enter the attic
Raccoons have exceptionally stable hands, which they use to climb on walls and roofs. They enter into the homes with ease, and access the home through wide hole-like vents and air ducts. They may use trees, which are in the house’s proximity to gain access to the house. They enter in vulnerable areas like dormers, soffit vents, roof vents and gable vents. Some raccoons tear up the wooden roof parts and enter the attic.

The damages caused by a California raccoon
Raccoons make their beds by ripping pieces of the wall and roof paper, insulation material and vent ducts. They also scratch walls, wooden beams and chew on electric cables and wires in the attic. This might lead to fire in case the exposed electric cables are touched. They also excrete and urinate in the attic, causing a terrible smell to come out of the attic. In addition to the smell, their excrement is a host to the California raccoon roundworm which is a form of zoonotic disease. They may fall through the ceiling due to their large size, resulting in damage to property.

Ways to remove California raccoons from the attic
You may consider putting California raccoon repellents in various places in the attic, or around the home. The repellents cause a lot of discomfort to the animal and may drive them out. Some of the most common repellents are coyote urine, organic California raccoon repellent and mothballs. You can also trap them using body grip traps, live cage traps and paw hold traps. When using traps, you might consider using marshmallows or bread baits because, meat based baits may attract the wrong animals like skunks and cats among others. You should place the bait at the extreme end of the trap just behind the trip pan. Traps are best set at the animal’s entry point to the house. You might also consider putting a radio in the attic to scare the animal away, or floodlights directed to where they sleep. This will scare them away because they will not have a place to hide.
